As the leaves around us start changing colours, my favourite season makes its way into our lives. To me, Autumn signifies the best season to dress up for as the crisp air brings with it a sense of renewal and excitement. It comes with layers, rich colours, jackets, knits and everything cosy.
With the temperature fluctuating, I love mixing and matching different textures and pieces. A light sweater paired with a chic scarf can transform an outfit, allowing for creativity and personal style. This time of the year, the landscape shifts into a breathtaking array of oranges, reds, and yellows. This vibrant backdrop inspires my fashion choices, encouraging me to incorporate these warm tones into my wardrobe (and yours). One of my favourite things to do this time of the year is actually rewatching (for the thousandth time) Gilmore Girls and letting the show’s fashion inspire my own.
That said, I believe that mastering the art of layering becomes crucial for both comfort and style this time of the year. From essential base pieces to trendy outerwear, I’m here to tell you exactly what you need to cover everything you need to elevate your seasonal wardrobe.
The Three Layers
Layering is more than just about staying warm; it’s also a means to showcase your personal style. Think of it this way, if you manage to put on three layers, then you’ve mastered it.
- Base Layer: This foundational piece should fit closely to your body and be made from breathable materials. Excellent options include fitted long-sleeve shirts or thermal tops made from merino wool or moisture-wicking fabrics.
- Insulating Layer: This middle layer adds warmth and can be adjusted according to the weather. Consider cosy sweaters, cardigans, or fleece pullovers that can be easily added or removed.
- Outer Layer: The final layer serves as a shield against the elements. Opt for stylish choices such as trench coats, puffer jackets, or tailored overcoats that not only keep you warm but also enhance your outfit.
Of course, mastering the layering technique can come in handy during Winter too – just go heavier on the materials you wear – or even in Spring, when you never know how light or heavy you should dress, so you wear clothes you can dress down.
Think of a chunky knit with a midi skirt and a leather jacket, or a turtle neck as a base for your slip dress with a fabulous trench coat as the outer layer. And as usual, I love sourcing the best vintage out there to match the seasons. I realise that the Second-Hand September campaign has recently come to an end, but for me, every month feels like Second-Hand September. It can be the same for you! All you need to do is check out these incredible vintage treasures I’ve gathered just for you.
Trench Coats
Trench coats have long been a staple in the world of fashion, transcending time and trends to remain a beloved outerwear choice. The arrival of autumn presents the perfect opportunity to invest in this versatile wardrobe essential. The way I think of a trench coat? Investing in a quality trench coat will enhance your wardrobe, offering both elegance and practicality as you embrace the beauty of fall.
Leather Jackets
Vintage leather jackets are a top choice for those looking to add a timeless piece to their wardrobe. This material is known for its longevity. A well-maintained vintage jacket can last for decades, often becoming more comfortable and stylish with age. Fashion trends come and go, but leather jackets remain a classic. Their enduring appeal makes them a staple in many wardrobes, transcending seasonal fads.
