The Best Fabrics For Your Summer

As the summer heat kicks in, staying cool and comfortable becomes a priority.

That’s when choosing the right fabric for your clothes can make a significant difference in how you feel throughout the day. If you follow @ellapopshop on Instagram, you will have noticed just how much I’ve gone on and on about summer season must-haves and fashion staples for this season, so I thought I’d put all my knowledge and information together in this blog post and make it easier for you to learn everything you need to know about summer must-haves

Linen

It's the perfect summer fabric as it's light, thin and airy but also super durable. Though a linen dress or trousers or top are light as air, they will also last for years to come. Linen is a natural fibre known for its cool and crisp feel, making it the choice for summer clothing.

This fabric is extremely breathable, allowing heat to escape and cool air to penetrate, which tends to keep you cool in hot weather. It can also absorb and release moisture quickly, ensuring that you stay dry and comfortable. It is especially useful in humid climates. If that's not enough to convince you, then just think that linen has been the fabric of choice in warmer climates for millennia. Plus, being a plant-based material, it’s also very environmentally friendly!

Cotton

Cotton is a natural fibre that has been a favourite for summer clothing for generations. Throughout history, people have recognised the value of this natural fibre. In modern times, the focus on sustainable materials has further emphasised the value of cotton clothing and how this material is processed.

Just like linen, cotton can retain a lot of liquids that slowly evaporate and make the garment cooler compared to other materials. Thin and light cotton fabric is preferred over thicker and darker ones, especially during the summer months, as it’s way more breathable. Cotton is a gentle fabric for all sensitive skin people out there, and it reduces the risk of allergic reactions caused by exposure to heat. Unlike synthetic fabrics, which can lead to skin irritation, cotton's hypoallergenic properties make it a safe choice - for summer and winter alike.

It's also a very versatile fabric. Whether you're looking for a casual pair of trousers or a more elegant dress, this material has been used for pretty much any design out there. It gives clothes a feeling of being more expensive, without actually being that much more pricey than plastic-based materials (if bought second-hand, of course).

Did you know that 100% cotton is biodegradable at least 50-77% in a large-scale compost in about three months, a process which returns carbon to the soil and enriches it?

Cargo & Utility

From high fashion to hype-wear to vintage, it seems like there’s an aspect of utility/utilitarian/military style in almost every single collection on the market, every single season. Whether it a jumpsuit, a vest, a pair of trousers with a million pockets or a pair of overalls, it’s clear that in the past 30 years, the utility trend has made quite a name for itself and connoisseurs of fashion and functionality alike are loving the common ground. Plus, most of the time these pieces will be made completely out of cotton or linen.

These pieces are some of the most loved during the months of summer, as they’re just the perfect ever-rising trend to wear to a festival, or while travelling. Not only they can be styled up or down in numerous ways, but the large number of pockets they usually feature makes them very versatile. Think of yourself in a situation where you’ll need your hands free this summer - like while travelling or dancing or at the beach - well, utility styles fit perfectly there. If you don't believe me, try for yourself!
